What QBE and Blue Zebra’s Motor Partnership Means for Operators

Capacity, claims capability and renewal timing remain key for truck fleets

What QBE and Blue Zebra’s Motor Partnership Means for Operators?w=400

QBE and Blue Zebra have extended their motor underwriting partnership, with Blue Zebra confirming a new multi-year agreement after the previous arrangement expired.
QBE has been underwriting Blue Zebra’s commercial and private motor products since July last year, following the end of the agency’s earlier arrangement with Youi.
For transport operators, the significance is less about the corporate announcement itself and more about what it says about motor insurance capacity: strong insurer backing remains critical in a market where appetite can shift quickly.

For owner drivers, SMEs and fleet managers, underwriting capacity influences more than whether a policy is available. It can affect the types of vehicles insurers will consider, how claims history is treated, the excess structure, driver requirements, vehicle usage assumptions and the level of supporting information needed at renewal. Even when a market appears competitive, heavy vehicle risks are still assessed closely because repair costs, parts delays, downtime exposure and high-frequency incidents can materially change the economics of a policy.

Blue Zebra has also strengthened its motor claims and underwriting leadership, appointing Ryan Grigg as head of claims, Sarahjane Goldych as motor claims manager and Brenden Anforth as senior technical underwriter for the motor portfolio. Mr Grigg will oversee claims operations across the combined group of agencies that includes Blue Zebra Insurance, SGUA, Allstate and Point. That claims focus matters for transport businesses because a slow or disputed motor claim can quickly become a cashflow problem when a prime mover, rigid truck, tipper or delivery vehicle is off the road.

The practical lesson is that renewal should be treated as a risk review, not an administrative task. Operators should have current vehicle schedules, driver details, maintenance records, claims history and contract requirements ready well before renewal. Businesses with telematics, fatigue management, documented servicing and evidence of driver training may be in a stronger position to explain their risk profile. Those with recent claims, inexperienced drivers, changing routes, modified vehicles or expanding fleets should expect more questions and should avoid leaving cover discussions until the last minute.

This development is a reminder that truck insurance buyers should keep a close watch on insurer appetite, not just headline premiums. A cheaper policy may not be better if it leaves gaps around drivers, radius of operation, trailers, downtime, hire vehicles or business-specific exposures. The best approach is to compare options early and use specialist brokers who understand commercial motor and heavy vehicle underwriting. In a changing market, preparation is often the difference between a rushed renewal and cover that properly supports the business.
