New APRA rules put insurer systems under the spotlight

Why resilience behind the policy now matters

Australia’s tougher operational risk regime is sharpening the focus on how life insurers manage the systems, partners and processes that sit behind every policy.
APRA’s CPS 230 standard requires regulated insurers to identify critical operations, set clear disruption tolerances and strengthen oversight of material service providers.
For customers, this is not just a back-office compliance story.
It goes to whether an insurer can keep issuing policies, collecting premiums and assessing claims when technology fails, a supplier has problems or a major disruption hits.

The timing matters because life insurance is a long-term promise. A policy may be held for decades, often through superannuation, and the real test usually arrives during stressful moments such as death, serious illness or disability. Recent attention on claims delays has already shown that service quality can be just as important as price. APRA’s rules add another layer: insurers must be able to demonstrate that they understand where operational weaknesses could affect policyholders and how those risks will be controlled.

For households, the change should encourage a broader view of value when reviewing cover. Premiums still matter, especially as cost-of-living pressure makes affordability a central concern. However, a very cheap policy is not necessarily better if the provider’s claims handling, communications or administration are weak. When comparing life insurance, it is worth looking at the insurer’s financial strength, claims reputation, product clarity and how easily customers can update details or contact support.

  • Check whether your policy is held directly or through superannuation, as the trustee and insurer may both affect service standards.
  • Review beneficiary nominations, occupation details and cover amounts so administration issues are less likely if a claim is made.
  • Use policy documents to understand waiting periods, exclusions and definitions before relying on headline benefits.

Operational resilience also has a personal planning angle. If a disruption delays paperwork or claim payments, families with little savings may feel the impact quickly. That makes it sensible to estimate the amount of cover needed with debts, income replacement and immediate expenses in mind, rather than choosing a figure at random.

The bigger message is that life insurance comparison is no longer only about premiums and benefits tables. Strong insurers need sustainable pricing, fair underwriting, reliable claims processes and robust operational systems. APRA’s regime should help lift standards over time, but consumers still need to read carefully, ask questions and treat service reliability as part of the overall value of cover.
