Why CALI’s Advice Push Matters for Workplace Life Cover

Clearer guidance could help employees make better use of the protection they already hold

The Council of Australian Life Insurers has renewed its call for Australians to receive simpler guidance about the life insurance they hold through superannuation, sharpening attention on a long-running problem for employers: many workers have cover, but do not clearly understand what it does, when it applies, or whether it remains suitable as their circumstances change.

The latest industry figures underline why this matters. Life insurers supported about 54,000 claims through group superannuation policies over the past 12 months, with payments approaching $6 billion. At the same time, CALI’s sentiment research indicates only one in three Australians understands the life insurance products and benefits they have. For HR leaders, CFOs and business owners, that gap is more than a personal finance issue. It affects workforce confidence, financial wellbeing and the perceived value of employee benefits.

Insurance through super can provide accessible death and disability protection, often without the friction of individual underwriting at the point of default cover. However, it is not a set-and-forget solution. Changes in role, income, working hours, family responsibilities, debt levels and business ownership can quickly alter whether a default level of cover is adequate. This is particularly relevant for senior staff, directors, key revenue producers and employees whose household finances depend heavily on one income.

CALI argues that the Federal Government’s Delivering Better Financial Outcomes reforms could help narrow the advice gap by allowing life insurers to provide simple advice about their own products when customers ask for assistance. If implemented well, that may make it easier for employees to obtain basic, timely answers without needing full personal financial advice for every question.

For employers, the development should prompt a practical review of how workplace insurance benefits are communicated. A strong benefits program is not only about whether cover exists; it is about whether employees know how to check eligibility, update beneficiaries, understand exclusions, and seek professional assistance where their needs are more complex.

Businesses reviewing suitable cover should consider:

  • whether group arrangements complement or duplicate insurance inside super;
  • how key person and executive cover differs from default employee cover;
  • whether staff education is included in onboarding and annual benefits updates;
  • how claims support would work if an employee or family member needed help; and
  • whether current sums insured reflect salary levels, debt exposure and business continuity risk.

The broader message is clear: life insurance is most valuable when people understand it before they need it. CALI’s renewed push for simpler advice should be treated as a timely reminder for Australian employers to make employee protection clearer, more visible and better aligned with modern workforce risks.

Fresh SME insurance reporting has put underinsurance back in the spotlight, with new national survey data indicating that many Australian small businesses are still not reviewing their cover as carefully as their risks are changing. For beauty salon owners, sole traders and mobile beauticians, the message is practical rather than alarming: a policy that suited the business a few years ago may no longer match today’s equipment values, treatment mix, stock levels or operating costs. - read more
