A fresh round of transport safety coverage has put truck fires back on the risk agenda for Australian operators.
While major crashes often attract the most attention, a vehicle fire can be just as disruptive for a business: the truck may be written off, the load may be damaged, a route may be blocked and the operator may lose income while replacement equipment is sourced.

For insurers, fire losses are rarely assessed in isolation. A claim can prompt questions about servicing records, brake and bearing maintenance, tyre condition, electrical modifications, refrigeration units, battery systems and whether drivers reported warning signs early enough. That does not mean a well-maintained vehicle cannot suffer a fire, but it does mean documentation can become critical when a claim is reviewed.

The practical message for transport businesses is straightforward: fire prevention should sit inside the same risk management system as fatigue, speed, loading and route planning. Scheduled servicing, thermal checks on wheel ends, attention to rubbing or exposed wiring, tyre pressure monitoring and prompt investigation of smoke, heat or unusual smells can all reduce exposure. For higher-risk work, operators may also consider fire suppression systems, better driver training and stricter rules around aftermarket electrical work.

The insurance implications go beyond the vehicle itself. Operators should check whether their policy settings reflect today’s replacement costs, including trailers, permanently fitted equipment, modifications and on-board technology. This is particularly important where a prime mover or rigid truck has specialised bodies, hydraulic gear, refrigeration equipment or custom fit-outs. Underinsurance can turn a large loss into a balance sheet problem, so estimating the right sum insured should be part of each renewal review.

Fire incidents also reinforce the importance of fast, accurate evidence capture. Photos, driver notes, service records, telematics data and repair invoices can help establish the sequence of events and support a cleaner claims process. As we noted in our earlier commentary on incident reporting, the quality of information collected in the first hours after an event can shape how efficiently a claim moves.

For owner-operators and fleets alike, the lesson is not to wait until renewal to think about fire risk. A short internal review now can identify gaps in maintenance records, cover limits, cargo protection and downtime arrangements. In a market where insurers increasingly reward disciplined risk management, preventing the fire is ideal, but being able to prove good practice can be just as valuable when something still goes wrong.
